Innovative battery coating withstands extreme heat, addressing safety concerns

A groundbreaking innovation in battery technology may soon address a critical safety issue for electric vehicle (EV) drivers. German company Axalta has introduced a new heat-resistant coating for EV batteries capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, potentially preventing incidents of thermal runaway – a rare but hazardous safety concern.

Thermal runaway occurs when a single battery cell overheats, triggering a chain reaction that can result in a fire. While EVs are statistically less likely to catch fire compared to gas-powered cars, high-profile incidents have fueled public concerns. "High-profile incidents and misinformation continue to impact public perception", said Dr. Robert Roop, an Axalta executive.

A revolutionary protective solution

Axalta’s innovative solution involves two new coatings, including one called Alesta e-PRO FG Black. This coating provides extreme heat resistance and can endure direct flames at temperatures as high as 2,192 degrees Fahrenheit without emitting smoke. The coating acts as a protective barrier, delaying or even preventing fires from spreading, which could give passengers valuable time to evacuate safely.

"The new coatings reflect our commitment to innovation and to partnering with customers to meet the challenges of next-generation mobility", Dr. Roop explained.

Innovations fueling safer EV advancements
